Frequently Asked Questions
What type of septic system is best for my home?
The size and type of your septic system is determined by the number of people using it and their habits. Septic systems may operate using gravity or through mechanical means. The most common type is a trench system that uses a tank, drainfield and a series of pipes. Others may use multiple tanks or aeration in their operation. The size, condition and grading of your property may dictate which type of system will work best at your home.
How much land do I need to accommodate a septic system?
An installation plan must take into account the amount of land available as well as obstacles, such as buildings, trees and set back requirements. Your tanks must be accessible for regular pumping or repairs. Leachfields must be positioned so as to be large enough and to allow for proper drainage. Your county health department will issue permits after approval of your installation plan. The optimum lot size for a septic system is about ¾ of an acre.
How can I extend the life of my leachfield?
Your leachfield uses microbes and absorption to clean and drain liquid waste from your septic system. Often a leachfield fails because of sludge that backs into it due to an overfull tank. Problems also occur when a field is overwhelmed and is unable to dry out properly. Regular pumping of your tank to remove solids will assure that sludge does not clog your leachfield. You also can encourage efficient absorption by limiting the amount of liquid dispensed into your leachfield in any 24-hour period. As much as 80 percent of your septic system water load is greywater—liquid from sinks, showers and laundry. Short showers and spreading laundry over several days can keep your field healthy by allowing more time for absorption and drying.
My leachfield is soggy. Is there anything I can do?
If your leachfield has wet spots, there may be a leak in your tank or pipe. It’s important to address this quickly, because a leachfield that does not dry out will eventually fail. Realize that leachfields do wear out over time and need to be replaced. The professionals at Right Choice can help you determine if a leak or a clogged screen is causing your soggy leachfield, or if you need to build a new leachfield.
